This record collects theories. Nothing here is confirmed canon; future chapters may prove any of it wrong.
Ilyan Venn disappeared in 2214 from a closed lift during a nine-second camera loss. Officially he is missing, presumed dead. The archive keeps the question open, because the evidence keeps arriving.
# Evidence that he survived
- No body, no fall and no breach were ever found. His harness was clipped to the frame with the buckle still closed. See The empty lift.
- The blackout packet contains his voice saying words that appear in no archived recording. See Six words.
- A coupler housing with the L-1’s serial number stands on a workbench on floor 7-4, partly disassembled, as an engineer would leave it. See Cryo Laboratory.
- The warning was addressed to Marek, using a name the shaft had never heard on any relay.
# Evidence that he did not
- Asterion holds hundreds of hours of his voice; something listening to the relay chain had ample material.
- After the 2214 calibration, the unlisted shard read as a perfect copy of RS-0114. The Rift copies things. A copy of a voice is not a living man.
- The caches show that the shaft can reproduce objects down to their scratches. The second L-1 housing may be one more copy.
# A third possibility
Ilyan’s own notes raise a reading that is neither: that he is “present in the machine network.” If the shaft learns the shapes of what it touches, and it touched Ilyan, then something down there may know him very well indeed. Whether that something is him is a question the archive cannot answer. It may be a question that has no answer.
If it can learn our shapes, it can learn our names.
