This record collects theories. Nothing here is confirmed canon; future chapters may prove any of it wrong.
Asterion’s staff argue about the Rift constantly. Four theories have enough support to be tracked by the archive. None is official. All of them may be wrong.
# 1. The immune response
Proposed by: Ilyan Venn, 2213. Summary: the Rift is a system defending itself. Its machines react to power, heat and repeated patterns, and each reaction is adjusted to the intruder that survived the last one. Guardians are memory cells; echoes are the shaft remembering. See Notes on an immune response.
- For: machines arrive faster and in greater numbers after every descent; guardians adapt to loadouts; nothing is ever pursued after it leaves.
- Against: immune systems do not build laboratories, workbenches or supply caches.
# 2. The archive
Proposed by: Tomás Reyes, 2216. Summary: the Rift is a recording device. Everything that enters it is stored as material memory and replayed. Shards are its storage medium; echoes are playback; caches are copies of what Asterion sent down.
- For: shards replay signatures; cache crates match originals down to their scratches; a second L-1 coupler housing sits on a workbench in the Cryo Laboratory.
- Against: a recording does not attack. Something is choosing what to replay.
# 3. The builders
Proposed by: various; popular with the Meridian Consortium. Summary: the Rift is abandoned infrastructure built by an unknown maker for a purpose that has since failed. Its machines are still running their last instructions, and the carrier is an obstacle.
- For: almost every catalogued machine has an identifiable working purpose; the shaft contains mines, foundries, vaults and power plants.
- Against: no maker’s mark, no writing and no remains of the makers have ever been found. And infrastructure does not speak in a missing man’s voice.
# 4. The Heart
Proposed by: Asterion Relay Control, informally. Summary: the Heart is a single intelligence, and the rest of the Rift is its body. The relay chain’s timing reference, the pulse that skipped on the night of the blackout, is its heartbeat.
- For: the pulse affects coupler current and pilot heart rate; the guardian shares it; the blackout packet passed through a relay within range of the Heart.
- Against: below the Heart, the shaft keeps going. If the Heart is the centre, why are there ninety more sectors?
Some at Asterion hold that all four theories describe the same thing from different distances.
