Tomás Reyes was a mid-career geophysicist running a routine mineral survey when his crew lost a drill bit into the Khepri Basin floor. He led the excavation that exposed the Rift, launched probe K-1 and wrote the notebook entry that gave the shaft its name. See Discovery of the Rift.
# Science director
Reyes became the first science director of Asterion Station when construction began in 2198. He was the strongest early voice against treating the Rift’s anomalies as instrument error. His team built the buffered relay chain and the first survey protocols. His final report in 2209 proposed measuring depth in phase intervals rather than metres, which is still the expedition standard. See Rift physics.
# Retirement
Reyes retired in 2209, two years before the Asterion Accord. He said he was too old to learn treaty language. He corresponded with Ilyan Venn until 2214 and was one of the few senior scientists to take the immune-response theory seriously.
After the blackout, Reyes sent the Directorate a single sentence, which Commander Graf filed without reply:
If it has learned to speak in a dead man’s voice, it has learned that you listen to the dead. Be careful what else you have taught it.
— Tomás Reyes, letter to Asterion, 2217
