Sana Okafor

Night chief of Asterion Relay Control and Marek’s only voice from the surface. She saw his launch request ninety seconds early.

Sana Okafor runs Asterion’s Relay Control on the night shift. In practice that makes her the person who talks to the C-9. The radio voice Marek hears in bursts from the upper relay is usually hers.

# Dispatcher

Okafor came to Asterion in 2206 as a cradle dispatcher for the lift program, coordinating launches between engineering, the relay desk and the rim lock. She worked alongside Ilyan Venn for eight years and was on the dispatch desk during the 2214 return test. She transferred to Relay Control afterwards and has not asked to go back.

# The blackout

At 03:17 on the night of the blackout, Okafor was alone at the relay desk when the eleven lower relays failed. She logged the loss, recovered the final packet and ran the voiceprint herself before waking anyone. See Six words.

When Marek Venn filed his recovery mission forty minutes later, the request appeared on her board ninety seconds before it reached Commander Graf. Okafor did not flag it. The investigation recorded the delay as a desk routing fault. She has never explained it.

# On the relay

Since the launch, Okafor has kept the upper relay alive on a rebuilt buffer, catching fragments of telemetry from the C-9 and sending back what route data she can. Her transmissions are mission context, not a live crew aboard. Marek descends alone. Directorate records list her conversations as “operational.” The transcripts suggest otherwise. See Relay transcripts.

I can’t follow you down, Venn. But I can keep the light on.
