Yara Demir

Ilyan Venn’s assistant and the mechanic who rebuilt his coupler into the C-9. She witnessed his disappearance.

Yara Demir is the mechanic who built the C-9. Every hardpoint, every cable run and every compromise in the carrier’s design passed through her hands.

# Assistant

Demir joined the lift program in 2209 as a fabrication technician and quickly became Ilyan Venn’s assistant. She was the one who turned his sketches into parts. She ran the console during the 2214 calibration and was the last person to speak to Ilyan before the cameras went dark. Her log is the only first-hand account. See The empty lift.

# The rebuild

When the Directorate suspended crewed descent, Demir kept working without a budget, mostly at night. She rebuilt Ilyan’s phase coupler from his notes and mounted it on the original survey frame, reasoning that the oldest hardware ever to return from the shaft was the most likely to return again. She stripped the design to a single pilot. She also insisted that the basic bolt turret stay on every configuration. “Something on that lift,” she wrote, “has to never run out.”

# Since the launch

Demir was not told about Marek’s launch until it had happened. She maintains that she would have stopped him. Asterion’s cradle logs show that the C-9’s emergency control sequence had been updated two days before the blackout, from her terminal.

It isn’t armoured enough, it isn’t fast enough, and it doesn’t have enough mounts. It’s the best lift ever built. Bring it back.
