Commander Helene Graf

Rim commander of Asterion Station. She locked the rim, ordered the evacuation and issued the recall order Marek ignored.

Helene Graf commands Asterion Station on behalf of the Continuity Directorate. She holds the rim lock and with it final authority over every launch into the Rift.

# Career

Graf came to Asterion from infrastructure security, where she ran the protection of dams and reactor sites. She was appointed rim commander in 2213 with a mandate to stop the station drifting toward the extraction interests of the Meridian Consortium. She opposed the 2214 follow-up calibration during which Ilyan Venn disappeared, and was overruled.

# The blackout

On the night of the blackout, Graf treated the final packet as an intrusion rather than a message. Her reasoning was sound: a voice can be copied, and something below had just reached the relay chain. She locked the rim, ordered the research crew to the outer ring and suspended all launches.

When the C-9 left its cradle she issued a recall order, then a second, then a formal charge of unauthorised descent against Marek Venn. See The recall order.

# Since the launch

Graf has not withdrawn the charge. She has also not cut the upper relay, though she has the authority to do so. Every supply drop the Directorate makes to the caches along Marek’s route carries her signature. Asked about the contradiction, she told the council: “I didn’t authorise his descent. I’m not going to authorise his death either.”
