The Heart of the Rift is the deepest region on the first pass of the descent map, and the source of the strongest carrier-compatible shard signal ever recorded.
# Environment
The rock here glows crimson from within, and the light pulses slowly, about once every four seconds. The carrier’s coupler current rises and falls with it. So, according to medical telemetry, does the pilot’s heart rate. Scaffolding and rails continue down the walls, but the rock between them looks less like stone and more like something grown.
Every relay in the original chain was tuned to the Heart’s pulse as a timing reference. The night of the blackout, the pulse skipped.
# Machines
The heaviest common waves of the first pass: Tanks in numbers, with Runners and Crawlers between them.
# Guardian
The Heart of the Rift shares the anomaly’s pulse and summons heavy units. It may be the system’s central intelligence, or only its most convincing decoy.
# What is the Heart?
The name “Heart” is used for three different things, and the archive cannot yet tell them apart: the guardian, this sector and the anomaly as a whole. The Heart is an entity, a machine or a name for the whole Rift; current evidence cannot decide. Below it, the shaft begins its first echo. See Open questions.
