The carrier crosses one hundred sectors, but the expedition recognises only ten environmental profiles and ten guardian patterns. Each time a profile returns, the crew calls it an echo. Sector 11 is logged as Industrial Rift / 2, sector 21 as Industrial Rift / 3, and so on down to sector 91, the tenth pass.
# Not a copy
An echo is never identical to the sector it repeats. On each pass the composition of enemy groups changes, resistance increases, colour signatures drift and machine behaviour shifts. Units that led the attack on the first pass may arrive last on the fifth. Guardians return stronger. Some of their patterns change and some stay exactly the same. The descent map records each pass separately.
This matters for the record. An echo of the Crusher is not proof that the machine destroyed on floor 1-10 was repaired. The archive treats each guardian encounter as its own event.
# Theories
Two explanations are taken seriously at Asterion:
- The rebuilding theory. The anomaly rebuilds usable space from a finite library of stored patterns. Rift Shards can replay physical states, so the shaft may be replaying itself. Each echo is a new performance of an old recording, with variations.
- The template theory. Guardians are independent machines updated from a shared template. Each one learns from what reached it and passes that lesson down. If so, the shaft below is studying the carrier on its way down.
Ilyan Venn favoured a third reading, outlined in his notebook: echoes are what an immune system looks like from the inside. The same defence is applied again and again, adjusted each time to the intruder that survived it. Neither theory has been proved. See Expedition theories.
# Practical consequences
For the pilot, echoes are both a gift and a warning. Knowledge of a profile carries over: where the vents are, how the guardian moves, which units to remove first. Habits carry over too, and echoes punish habits. Every tenth floor still ends in a guardian encounter, and the carrier recovers the next route key there.
