# 11 March 2211

P-3 footage again. Watched the Crawler sequence nineteen times. It is not attacking the platform. It is inspecting it. Approach, contact, withdraw, report (?). The scar is what inspection looks like when the inspector is built for rail repair and the thing being inspected is not a rail.

# 2 June 2212

Second platform lost at interval 14. Same pattern as the first, but the machines arrived 40% faster and in greater number. They knew where to wait. Asked Reyes if he thought they communicate. He said: everything down there communicates, the question is whether it means to.

# 19 January 2213

Graf asked why the machines “keep getting better.” She thinks someone is upgrading them. I think we are.

Every time we send something down, the shaft learns its shape: power signature, mass, weapons, the frequency of the coupler. Next time, it answers that shape a little faster. Not an army. An army has a purpose. This is a reaction. Fever. Antibodies. ~~It doesn’t hate us~~ It doesn’t know we’re us. It knows we’re foreign.

Consequences (write these down before you lose your nerve):

Every descent makes the next one harder.
The guardians are not walls. They are memory cells.
An echo is the shaft remembering the last intruder that got through.
If it learns the shape of a person, not just a vehicle, then it will learn to answer people.

Presented the immune model to the council. Meridian’s representative asked whether antibodies could be harvested. Graf asked whether we should stop going down at all. I told them both yes. Neither was pleased.

Marek on cradle shift again. Taught him the emergency sequence today, all of it, the routines that aren’t in the manual. He asked why. I said, in case somebody ever has to fly this thing alone. He laughed.
