Industrial Rift

Sector 1. The first mapped galleries: alloy ribs, old rails, a cyan guide channel and the impact scars of the Crusher.

The Industrial Rift is the first sector below the rim and the best-understood stretch of the shaft. It was mapped by platform P-3 in 2206, and every survey since has passed through it.

# Environment

The walls are ribbed grey alloy, braced every few metres by heavy frames. A cyan guide channel runs down one side and gives off a steady light that pilots use to judge their speed. Old rails, cable trays and inspection ladders line the walls. Some are human survey equipment bolted in during the 2190s. Most are not, and are much older.

The air is cold and dry and smells faintly of hot metal. Red indicator lights blink along the frames on a cycle no one has decoded.

# Machines

Common units here are maintenance and haulage machines: Crawlers working the walls, Runners carrying messages along the maintenance lanes and Tanks hauling loads. On every third wave a Commander arrives to drive them harder. None of them seem built for combat. All of them have learned to fight.

# Guardian

The tenth floor belongs to the Crusher, a breach machine built around an industrial pile driver. The deep, regular scars along the sector’s walls, which the survey era mistook for drill marks, are its work. See Floor ten for the C-9’s first encounter.

# Pilot notes

The Industrial Rift is where pilots learn the basics: keep the basic turret powered, kill Runners before they reach the lift, and save cannon rounds for the guardian. It is forgiving by the standards of the shaft. Its echoes are not.
