The survey era (2190–2206)

Relays, tether platforms and the first Rift Shard: sixteen years of learning how to go down, and how hard it is to come back.

For sixteen years after its discovery, the Rift was explored by instruments and cables. Nobody went down. The period is remembered for patient engineering and for repeated, unexplained losses.

# The relay chain

Radio did not behave in the shaft (see time skew), so the survey bolted relays into the wall at regular intervals. Each relay buffered every packet until the next one confirmed receipt. The chain was slow, but it was the only reliable voice the expedition had below the rim.

In 2192 the relay at interval 6 stopped answering. When a tether crew recovered it, the casing was warm to the touch, though the unit had been designed to run cold and had been unpowered for days. Inside, fused to the circuit board, was a fingernail-sized crystal that no one had installed. It held a stable energy signature that matched nothing in the lab. It became catalogue item RS-0001, the first Rift Shard. See The warm relay.

# Tether platforms

From 2193 the survey lowered tether platforms: open frames carrying instruments, lights and a sample arm. They could go down. They struggled to come back. Above interval 9 the cable often returned without its platform, cut cleanly or simply ending. Two platforms were lost outright. A third returned in 2195 with deep, regular impact scars along one side, the first physical evidence that something down there was moving. The scars matched no tool on site.

Analysts later matched the spacing of the scars to the manipulator of a Crawler-type maintenance unit. In 2195 nobody had seen one.

# Platform P-3

In 2206 the lift program, then led by Ilyan Venn, sent an autonomous platform designated P-3 on a long descent. P-3 reached the first stable industrial galleries and mapped three full sectors before contact was lost. Its sample canister, winched up on a separate line, arrived carrying a strip of Rift alloy that remained magnetised with no power source. That strip became the heart of the first phase coupler.
