Rift Shards are fragments of the anomalous material found in the shaft’s relays, alloy and guardian cores. They look like small crystals of dark glass with a faint inner light. After removal they keep a repeatable energy signature, enough to power a phase coupler for as long as anyone has measured.
# History
The first shard was found in 2192, fused into the circuit board of a relay that had failed and come back warm. See The warm relay. It was catalogued as RS-0001. It still powers the station clock in Relay Control.
The most famous shard is the unlisted one found in the L-1 lift after the 2214 return test. Its signature matches nothing else on record. It is sealed in Asterion’s laboratories, where staff call it the passenger.
# Properties
- Stable output. A shard gives a small, steady current through a coupler.
- Material memory. A shard can replay physical states (heat, field strength, vibration) present when it formed.
- Restless pattern. Removing a shard produces a stable lab signature, but its internal pattern keeps shifting.
Rift Shards are not ordinary fuel. Directorate scientists describe them as “a battery that is also a recording.” Ilyan Venn described them as “scar tissue.”
# On the descent
The C-9 recovers shard fragments from guardian cores and relay wreckage. Fragments are sent up the relay as data, not material. Each record lets Asterion run permanent research on the carrier’s reactor, weapons, hull, drones and shields.
